Super Bowl vs Black Friday – Best Time to Buy a TV

Infographic: When is the best time to buy a TV?

FatWallet’s annual TV Buyer Survey (*TNS) reports 26% of Americans will buy a new TV this year (that number increases significantly to 40% for those with children and 35% for those under age 30). Of those, 25% said Super Bowl sales this month (#1 choice) are the best time to buy a TV and when they’re most likely to do so, while 18% will wait for Black Friday deals (#2 choice). Almost half (46%) are planning to purchase their first 4K TV this year, and 29% say they now stream the bulk of their TV programming, which is up 21% from a year ago. More than half surveyed (55%) plan to spend $500 or more on a new TV this year, and 27% will spend $700 or more. TV buyers are split on what size TV they want as 43% lean towards mid-sized screens (40-54 inch) and 41% want 55-inch or bigger TV screens (only 5% will buy TVs 70-inch or bigger). Finally, 46% claim that price impacts their TV purchase most, while 36% said features and 18% said brand.

10 TV Deals To Make 50th Super Bowl “Golden”

4K TV Deals Offer Best Big Game Experience

TV-Deals-Super-Bowl-postTV prices continue to drop coming into January, aligning with those consumers who ranked Super Bowl sales as the best time to buy versus Black Friday TV deals (see FatWallet survey). In fact, many current TV deals are better than TV prices from November, especially 2015 4K TV models and higher quality name brand big screens featuring high refresh rates (120Hz minimum for optimum sports viewing). This is, in part, due to what’s coming post-CES, when 4K (UHD) gets a massive upgrade to newer SUHD, HDR, modular TV and a rollable OLED — “rollable” as in a 4K TV that rolls up like a big poster (can we get a rollable smartphone?).

What’s more? People are streaming their TV programming like never before–3 in 10 now stream the majority of TV content, which is up more than 20% from 2015 (and that’s a whopping 7 in 10 for those under age 30). The new Apple TV, Roku 4K TV, Amazon Fire TV are selling like hot cakes, not to mention word on a newer Sony Android TV. All have voice command functionality and a plethora of apps to keep you busy for a lifetime. This includes watching the Golden Super Bowl (50th) via the CBS Sports Channel/App, which can be found on Roku, AppleTV, XBOX One, Windows 10, and Chromecast. You an also watch it online for free or via the NFL mobile app (if you have Verizon). Pregame starts Sunday morning, Feb. 7, and runs through the first half, a ColdPlay halftime show, those ads, the second half and post game late Sunday night. Don’t know about you, but a big new 4K TV sounds like a much better experience than a smartphone!?

Gadget Deals: 2015 Black Friday Predictions (Series)

Smart gadgets amp up best Black Friday Electronics Deals.

Black Friday Gadget PredicitonsMany of last year’s best Black Friday deals brought some of the lowest prices ever on a fathom of techie widgets and wonders that few needed, but most wanted. There were +2,200 gadget deals (750 deals were under $20) of various electronics from more than 100 brands featured in Black Friday Ads, including everything imagined for connecting smart devices via the cloud, wireless, WiFi, Bluetooth, HDMI and USB (and yes, some still plug in to the wall).

We saw some of the best prices of the year on streaming media players from Google, Apple and Roku, and heavy discounting on digital cameras, smart wearables and mobile device cases and accessories. Last year, drones were one of the hottest Black Friday gadgets – nano drones with HD cameras now stream to all those new smartphones and tablets flooding the holiday gift scene, giving us yet another tech goodie to pair with our mobile devices.

FatWallet.com 2015 Black Friday Predictions

Expect the big 3 of Best Buy, Walmart and Target to lead the way with some of the deepest discounts on top brands like Apple, Beats and Samsung by offering in-store gift card incentives to get prices down. Black Friday shoppers should see up to $100 in gift cards when purchasing an Apple Watch and $50 gift cards on Beats headphones. The older wearables will see the lowest prices ever, with Fitbit Flex below $50, Pepple Steel for under $100 and Motorola 360 and Samsung Gear Live for around $125.

Roku 4Streaming media devices will be one of the biggest gadget gifts on holiday shopping lists with nearly every major player bringing in new technology for the holiday. The new Apple TV and Roku 4 (just released featuring 4K streaming, and game changers to this market) will see modest discounting around $130 (currently both devices can be pre-ordered for $149…best to wait a month on these). New Chromecast 2 and Amazon’s Fire TV Stick will also see some modest discounting with those models coming in under $30 and $40 respectively as coveted doorbusters, somewhere.

  • Beats headphones for less than $100

  • Nano drones w/HD cameras under $25

  • Streaming media devices at 25% off

  • Fitbit Flex/Jawbone UP2 under $60

  • $100 gift card with Apple Watch purchase

Other hard-to-resist electronics deals will clutter Black Friday ads featuring heavily discounted bluetooth speakers, wireless printers, iPods and a never-ending assortment of earbuds. In fact, this will be the best year yet to buy these items starting in early November sales and into Cyber Monday and Cyber Week sales. Many current electronics deals easily surpass last year’s Black Friday deals and adding FatWallet cash back from more than 1,400 electronics and computer stores can make them the best deals possible on the internet…who wouldn’t get cash back?

Video Game Deals: 2015 Black Friday Predictions (Series)

Bundle up for the best BLACK FRIDAY Video Game deals…ever!

Video Game PredictionsEvery holiday, video games are of the most anticipated shopping categories, especially during Black Friday sales. Gamer enthusiasts are already up to date with the latest and greatest products as soon as pre-orders become available (disregarding cost), but average folks will hold out for late November when we see the lowest prices of the year. In 2014, there were 1,900 Black Friday video game deals, +500 console deals, +400 bundled deals and +490 video game deals under $20. A large majority of these advertised deals were offered at their lowest price ever, and this trend won’t be ending this November.

2015 Black Friday Predictions

As in year’s past, we’ll see a plethora of Xbox One and PS4 console bundles this Black Friday. Bundled consoles and games easily offer the best value for those wanting the whole package, even if you have to settle for games you may not totally prefer. The price differences between buying individual consoles vs. console bundles can range from $25 up to $100, depending on the games and other bundled bonuses (like free 3 month Xbox One Gold memberships). Some retailers will include gift cards, like one of last year’s best video game deals which featured an Xbox One w/Assassin’s Creed Unity and Black Flag games +$50 Target gift card for $329.99 (making your final price $279.99). This will indeed be the kind of deals to look for again.

Oculus RiftAs we await Oculus Rift to come full circle and radically change human behavior, the Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition for Samsung Galaxy S6  (currently selling for a low price of $99 at Best Buy and drop a bit more as a hot Black Friday deal), more complete video games are the focus of this year’s lineup of holiday releases. The newest games are taking advantage of the PS4 and Xbox One capabilities, live streaming/multi-player leagues and membership perks.m as well as even more realistic and up close detailing. The long list of holiday releases include Guitar Hero Live, Halo 5: Guardians, Forza 6, Destiny: the Taken King, Fifa 16 (w/womens soccor for the first time!!), Mario Maker (for Wii U), Minecraft Story Mode, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Lego Marvel’s Avengers and Star Wars Battlefront. Many of these new games will hit Black Friday ads at 25% off (about $45 and up) with older games up to 50% off (usually when you buy 2 or more). Here’s what we expect to see:

  • Half-priced 2015 games w/25% off the newest holiday releases

  • Wii U bundles below $200*

  • Xbox One bundles below $275*

  • PS4 bundles below $350*

  • Xbox One Limited and Elite bundles drop below $450

(*factoring in value of included bonus store gift cards of $30 or more)

Many current video game deals already surpass last year’s Black Friday deals (e.g., current pricing for Xbox One bundle w/Gears of War is $298) and expect retailers to raise the bar again come Thanksgiving Day, if not before during November’s Early Black Friday sales.

Top 5 iPad & Tablet Deals: 2015 Black Friday Predictions (Series)

Tablet PredictionsBLACK FRIDAY tablet deals to rival 2014 prices

Tablet and iPad deals catapulted  in the Black Friday ads last year with 590 deals (vs. 331 in 2013) from 47 retailers and more than 30 brands, including 60 door-buster deals, 180 iPad deals, 140 tablet deals for less than $100 and one Tigerdirect Android tablet deal for $5 (after $50 mail-in-rebate). Nearly every major tablet maker had at least one new model to offer (unlike 2013 where basically Apple and a trailing Amazon brought new products in this category during the holiday shopping season).

FatWallet.com 2015 Black Friday Predictions

If you haven’t entered the tablet era, this may be the best time to do it. More than one in four American parents say they will buy tablets this year (FatWallet survey), up 8 percent from 2014. The high anticipation of the new iPad Pro, expected to rival Microsoft Surface Pro 3 and 2-in-1 hybrid laptops, and a remarkably improved iPad Mini 4, are already bringing older tablet prices down.

Amazon adds the new $50 Fire tablet to the mix, where one can order a six-pack of these new stocking stuffers for $250. The catch is that these tablets require up-charges to forego unwanted ads and add adequate memory upgrades. They also only feature SD, not HD, resolution with slower processing technology. We expect the price of Amazon Black Friday Fire HD deals at $79.99 again or even lower (see below), making this is a much better value over the newer $50 Fire.

  • Amazon Fire HD 7 for less than $100

  • More than 50 tablet deals for less $50

  • Leapfrog LeapPad Platinum less than $100

  • $100 off new Samsung Galaxy Tab S2

  • $100 off all iPad Air/Mini/Pro models

Like the last couple of years, expect gift card bonuses to help lower the price of all iPad models, possibly as much as $200 from one of the big-box stores. We’ve already seen discounting up to $50 off the new Samsung Galaxy S2, so expect at least $100 off most Galaxy Tab products. Other quality tablet lines like Toshiba Encore, Nexus 7, Dell Venue, Sony Experiea will have great tablet choices for less than $150 and the new high-end Google Pixel C (just announced) could make a splash by discounting its starting price of $499, if available in time for Black Friday. Many current Tablet and iPad deals already surpass last year’s Black Friday deals, and we fully expect retailers to raise the bar again come Thanksgiving Day.

Nexus 6P, Pixel C, Marshmallow – Google Nexus Event Recap

new black friday contendersGoogle Nexus event brings us new smartphones, tablets,  TV hardware and software upgrades, all in time for the holidays.

Not to be outdone by Apple, Google strategically squeezes in a big announcement of new hardware and software in September. Although there were few major surprises for tech followers, new consumer products and what appears to be a significant Android update (6.0 Marshmallow available to current users next week) will keep Google in the pre-holiday shopping trends rhetoric for current cell phone deals. The event included details on these products:

  1. Google Nexus 6P premium smartphone
  2. Google Nexus 5X budget-friendly smartphone
  3. Google Pixel C high-end tablet
  4. Google Chromecast 2
  5. Chromecast Apps

Break Out the Marshmallow(s)

The new flagship Google Nexus 6P ($499 starting price) sports a 5.7-inch display with a metal body and new Nexus Imprint (finger print sensor), a USB C port and 12 megapixel Sony camera featuring 4k video with a slow-mo option. The 6P is built for quality and performance, helping it compete with the new iPhone 6S and Samsung Galaxy S6 series smartphones. The more budget-friendly Nexus 5X ($397 starting price) sports a 5.2-inch display but is a slight downgrade in the performance and features of the 6P. However, it is an upgrade from the previous LG Nexus 5 models. Both run Android 6.0 Marshmallow. (Pre-0rders available now in the US for both phones.)

The new Pixel C tablet sports a 10.2-inch display with a Nvidia Tegra X1 processor and 3GB of RAM running the new Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It’s designed to compete with the Surface Pro 3 and new iPad Pro and should be available for the holidays ($499 starting price, with optional “bluetooth” keyboard at $149).

Chromecast 2 gets a pretty big makeover with a new design in three colors (starting at $35 and available now). It supports 5GHz Wi-Fi for more optimized/faster steaming (does not support 4k). And the Chromecast app gets an upgrade as well, with a universal voice search tool, a “What’s On” feature and “Fast Play,” which caches videos based on your experience. Plus, you’ll now have access to Showtime, Spotify, NBA, NHL and Sling TV support.

For fans of Google products, it’s a big win and upgrade that was needed to keep up with the rest of the heap. Hopefully we’ll see some nice price-drops come Black Friday (follow our series 2015 Black Friday Predictions).

Laptop Deals: 2015 Black Friday Predictions (Series)

laptop dealsBLACK FRIDAY Laptop Deals Continue to Drop

If laptops are the death of desktops, then tablets must surely be the death of laptops, right? Not so fast, my friends. While iPad sales slump, MacBook sales have grown, and while the market is flooded with slow-selling, cheap Android tablets, hybrid 2-in-1 laptop prices keep coming down (we’ll see what happens when the iPad Pro hits the corporate market).

In fact, there were a record 300 Black Friday laptop deals in 2014 (165 in 2013), including 30 laptops for less than $200 and nearly 100 for less than $300 (the cheapest iPad Air 2 started at $399 last Black Friday).

2015 Black Friday Predictions

This year, 2-in-1 hybrid laptop deals will drop low enough to make owning a laptop-and-tablet combo an affordable option. The emergence of the iPad Pro and bigger, cheaper smartphones will push some hybrid prices down below $400 (ASUS Transformer, HP Pavilion). Also, expect high-end hybrid laptop prices (Microsoft Surface Pro 3, Lenovo y50) to drop as much as $500. Apple shoppers can expect Black Friday deals on older MacBook Pro and Macbook Air laptops below $700, with MacMall and Best Buy will leading the way on major deals. Here’s what we expect to see:

  • Door-buster portable laptops for less than $100

  • Touchscreen laptops for less than $200

  • All-in-one PCs for less than $300

  • 2-in-1 hybrid laptops for less than $400

  • MacBook Pro for less than $700

For the budget shoppers, this will be the year to score laptop door-busters for less than $100 (at least a couple from big-box stores like Staples) and touchscreen models for less than $200. Inventory of more higher-end, older laptop models will see significant mark-downs of 20-40% off, and all-in-one desktop PCs the same, with some models falling below $300. Based on last year, your best bet for finding the best “value” will come from stores like Microsoft Store, Dell and Lenovo. The addition of increased cash back throughout the holiday season will sweeten any Black Friday computer deal by adding 2 to 8% more savings by clicking through FatWallet to your store of choice.

Many current laptop deals already surpass last year’s Black Friday deals — as consumers were right in ranking back-to-school laptop deals as better than Black Friday — that is, until this Thanksgiving Day resets the bar.

Smartphone Deals: 2015 Black Friday Predictions (Series)

smartphone deals predictionsBLACK FRIDAY Smartphone deals get a new twist

Last year’s 2014 Black Friday ads featured a record 230 cell phone deals and even more deals on accessories. Many deals featured a free phone and/or in-store gift card if you opted in to a two-year contract. But the landscape of buying a smartphone or cell phone has changed.

Instead of offering low prices on the phones with a two-year contract — with the remaining cost of the phone cost seamlessly worked in to your monthly contract charges — we now “lease” phones, making for a more transparent monthly charge to buy the phone. Recently, Apple and now Samsung (CNET) announced direct lease/upgrade programs, forcing major carriers to respond with similar offers (see iPhone 6S Buying Guide). NOTE: T-Mobile’s JUMP! program has let customers upgrade since 2013 for an additional $10/month.

FatWallet.com 2015 Black Friday Predictions

2015 Black Friday iPhone deals and competitor smartphone deals will look a bit different this year, which will make them more difficult to compare with the past. That said, expect similar discounting from carriers on existing monthly lease plans, with current monthly charges for smartphone leasing dropping by 25% or more.

Big-box stores will lure customers in with huge door-buster gift cards (e.g., Best Buy is currently offering a free $200 Best Buy gift card with the purchase/activation of any smartphone from Verizon Wireless). Trade-in offers will see modest increases, hopefully besting this current Verizon offer of up to $400. Those looking for family plans (T-mobile currently has 4 lines for $140) and phone bundling leases (B1G1) will be pleased on Black Friday, and we may see some bundling of phones and tablets, too. Here’s a list of predictions to set an alert for:

  • Sprint iPhone Forever lease will drop to $5/month, and Verizon and AT&T will lower the iPhone 6S monthly lease to less than $20

  • Free SIM cards with the purchase of Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge

  • T-Mobile Family Plan for less than $100 (4-10GB lines)

  • Best Buy, Walmart and Target will offer $100 Gift Cards with the iPhone 6S

  • Previous generation smartphones will drop to their lowest prices ever

Black Friday shoppers should also be on the lookout for increased cash back from FatWallet. Current cash back rates vary from $37.50 to up to $125 per purchase from two dozen carriers. Plus, keep your eye on Amazon for cheap cell phone accessories throughout the holidays and eBay for some of the lowest prices available for unlocked smartphones.

TV Deals: 2015 Black Friday Predictions (Series)

BF Pred TV deals 350A forecast of 2015 BLACK FRIDAY TV deals

Holiday shoppers expect Black Friday deals to feature crazy HDTV deals. Last year was no exception, with Black Friday ads featuring a record of more than 650 TV deals from 36 retailers (versus 430 TV deals in 2013), 80 TV door-busters and nearly 50 4K TV deals (not including Amazon Lightening Deals).

In fact, price drops on TVs have continued throughout 2015 starting in January (Jan TV deals vs. Black Friday), and consumers rank Super Bowl TV deals second only to Black Friday (FatWallet 2015 TV shopping survey). Many current TV deals are actually better than Black Friday prices, especially 4K TVs. Is this foreshadowing more craziness ahead, like a deal on this extremely over-priced new 8k TV?

FatWallet.com 2015 Black Friday Predictions

TV deals won’t disappointment shoppers, especially online shoppers who can nab door-buster like prices from their recliners or mobile devices this Thanksgiving. Of course, we’ll see those marginal quality TV door-busters with a few 40-inch models for less than $100 (beating last year’s Target TV deal at $119.99), a few 50-inch LED models for less than $200 and an off-brand 50-inch 4K model or two well below $300 (trumping TigerDirect’s $399 Seiki deal).  Here’s a quick list to keep in your crosshairs:

  • 40-inch LEDs for less than $100

  • 50-inch LEDs for less than $200 (60-inch doorbusters?)

  • 50-inch 4K off-brand models for less than $300

  • 60-inch LED models for less than $400

  • 50-inch or better Smart HDTV models for less than $400

  • 50-inch or larger high-quality 4k models from $800

The new Apple TV and plethora of new streaming digital TV programming choices will position hundreds of smart TVs at half-price or better, and many of those quality big-screen 4K TVs that simmered around $1,000 or more last year will surely dip into a tempting price range that more of us can afford. Other trends could include TV bundles with smart HDTVs, including Netflix and Hulu Plus subscriptions, or non-smart TVs including a streaming media device, video gaming and/or soundbars.

New iPhone 6S Buying Guide – You Have Options

iphone 6s buying guide

When the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were released in 2014, your ordering options were simple: shell out $199 or more with a two-year mobile contract…done! All that has changed. You can now lease an unlocked iPhone as part of a monthly carrier installment plan, which leads to ownership, or buy it outright, again unlocked. In the end, the actual iPhone 6S is the same no matter where you buy it, and although the prices may vary some (perhaps much more come Black Friday), the carrier performance can be drastically different depending on your location.

Here’s a guide to your options for ordering or trading in a new iPhone 6S through AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon. Or you can take advantage of Apple’s new monthly financing programs and choose your carrier while upgrading almost at will. (Bookmark this iPhone 6S Buying Guide for more updates of options as they develop.)

AT&T:

AT&T Next 18 phone plan lets consumers pay off iPhones with monthly financing (24 months total). Customers can upgrade to new iPhones for free every 12 months (requires a trade-in of current iPhone on contract). AT&T also offers other options that allow device replacement and currently have trade-in credits of up to $300. Or, if switching from competitive carriers, you may be eligible for credits of up to $500. Next 18 costs $27 per month for the new 16GB iPhone 6S and $55 per month for average costs of unlimited talk/text and 2GB of data. The 24-month total cost will set you back $1,970.

AT&T DEALS: Get up to $50 in Cash Back from FatWallet

Sprint:

Sprint iPhone Forever is a 22-month lease program. You pay only $15 per month for a new 16 GB iPhone 6S with trade-in of your old smartphone or $22 per month if you don’t have a trade-in. Final cost of the lease is $330 with a trade-in or $484 without trade-in. Any additional cost to purchase the phone after the lease agreement is unknown at this time. Average costs for unlimited talk/text and 1GB of data will cost you $45 per month. The 22-month total cost will set you back $1,410 with the initial trade-in or $1,564 without trade-in.

Sprint’s $15 DEAL: Get up to $125 in Cash Back from Fatwallet

T-Mobile:

T-Mobile Jump On Demand is an 18-month lease program. It costs $20 per month to lease a new 16 GB iPhone 6s. That’s a total of $360 at the end of the program. After 18 months, you can turn in the phone and pay nothing more or pay an extra $164 and buy the smartphone outright for a total price of $524. That’s below Apple’s retail cost of about $650. Average costs for unlimited talk/text and 1GB of data will cost you $50 per month, making the 18-month total cost $1,560 to lease or $1,724 to own the phone. T-Mobile is also offering floating values for trade-ins.

T-Mobile DEALS: Get up to $37.50 in Cash Back from FatWallet

Verizon:

Like AT&T, Verizon offers an installment purchase plan on a 16 GB iPhone 6s for $27 per month for 24 months, after which you own the phone. Verizon is also currently offering up to $400 on trade-ins. Average costs for unlimited talk/text and 1GB of data will cost you $50 per month, bringing a total 24-month investment of $1,848. TIP: You should be able to bargain for 2GB of data for the price of 1GB if you make your purchase on a call versus online or in-store.

Verizon DEALS: Get up to $37.50 in Cash Back form FatWallet

Apple:

For the first time in its history, Apple is offering direct monthly installments from the Apple Store (no-interest contracts are financed through Citizens One). Customers have two choices:

  1. A general installment plan for the 16GB iPhone 6s for $27 per month, and after 24 months ($648), you own the phone
  2. A new Apple iPhone Upgrade Program where customers can pay $32.41 per month, which includes the AppleCare+ extended warranty service (customer care and phone replacement). You can  then exchange the iPhone at the end of 12 months for a new model by restarting the 24-month contract (final phone cost of $778 after 24 months).

The best part here is that now when you buy an iPhone through Apple, it comes UNLOCKED, allowing you to shop for the mobile carrier of choice.

In conclusion: Apple seems to have thought this out well. Having the peace of mind to be able to upgrade to a the newest iPhone every 12 months, replace it or trouble shoot technical issues with customer service for free, and move around to the mobile carrier that has the best signal or best deal may be worth a few extra bucks.

That said, Apple does not participate in offering Cash Back through FatWallet, and cash back can add considerable savings when your purchasing a big ticket item like cell phone deals (get up to $125 in cash back) and accessories.

The new FatWallet Express is the “easy button” for online shoppers to assure cash back on every purchase online, and FatWallet Cash Back Shopping App for the same savings opportunities on their mobile devices.
